Dubai unveils plans for a $35 billion airport terminal set to become the world’s largest upon completion, announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The terminal, five times the size of Dubai International Airport, aims to handle up to 260 million passengers annually, solidifying Dubai’s status as a global aviation hub.
All operations at Dubai International Airport will gradually transition to the new Al Maktoum International Airport, paving the way for extensive urban development around the airport in Dubai South. The project is expected to accommodate a million people and attract leading companies in logistics and air transport sectors, contributing to Dubai’s economic growth.
Once completed, Al Maktoum International Airport will feature five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates, serving as the new home for flagship carrier Emirates. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, emphasizes the significance of this development in bolstering Dubai’s aviation infrastructure and reinforcing its position as a premier aviation destination.
Dubai’s ambitious airport expansion comes amidst its continuous growth in international travel, with Dubai International Airport maintaining its status as the world’s busiest airport for international travel for a decade. The record-breaking influx of visitors in 2023 highlights Dubai’s appeal as a global tourism and business destination, driving the need for expanded airport capacity to meet growing demand.
