Safaricom Ethiopia Telecommunications PLC has signed a joint venture agreement with Ethiopia’s National ID Program and Africom Technologies PLC to support the implementation of the National Fayda Digital ID Registration Project under Lots 3 and 4. The partnership marks another milestone in Ethiopia’s digital transformation journey and is expected to accelerate the rollout of the country’s national digital identity system.
Under the agreement, the partners will support citizen registration across Afar, Amhara, Tigray, Sidama, South West Ethiopia, Central Ethiopia and South Ethiopia. The initiative aims to expand access to digital identity services, enabling more Ethiopians to participate in the country’s growing digital economy and access a wider range of public and private sector services.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Safaricom Ethiopia CEO Wim Vanhelleputte said the project will help accelerate digital inclusion, improve access to essential services and strengthen the foundations of Ethiopia’s modern digital economy. Beyond digital access, the nationwide registration programme is also expected to create employment opportunities for thousands of Ethiopians.
National ID Program Executive Director Yodahe Zemichael highlighted that the Fayda Digital ID programme is a key pillar of the Digital Ethiopia agenda, supporting financial inclusion, improved public service delivery, stronger governance and broader economic growth through secure digital identity.
The partnership reflects continued collaboration between the public and private sectors to expand digital infrastructure and inclusion across Ethiopia. By combining nationwide connectivity with digital identity services, the initiative aims to support a more connected, inclusive and digitally enabled economy
