MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita has been appointed as a founding commissioner of the AI for Good Global Commission, a United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU) initiative focused on expanding digital access, building trust and accelerating economic impact through the responsible use of artificial intelligence. The appointment places MTN at the centre of global discussions shaping the future of AI governance and digital inclusion.
Made up of more than 40 founding members, the AI for Good Global Commission brings together leaders from governments, businesses and international organisations to unlock AI’s potential for sustainable development. The Commission builds on the success of the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, which played a key role in advancing global digital inclusion and economic development.
Commenting on the appointment, Ralph Mupita said it is an honour to serve as one of the founding commissioners, noting that AI has the potential to transform healthcare, education, food security and industrial productivity. He emphasized that artificial intelligence must be developed in a way that is safe, ethical and globally inclusive, principles that align with the Commission’s mission.
The Commission’s inaugural meeting will take place this week in Geneva, Switzerland, under the co-chairmanship of Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff. The gathering will bring together global leaders to shape strategies that maximize AI’s benefits while promoting responsible and equitable adoption worldwide.
The appointment also aligns with MTN Group’s strategic focus on leveraging AI for growth, with the company targeting R30 billion in value creation over the next three to five years. It reinforces MTN’s commitment to driving digital innovation while contributing to global efforts that ensure artificial intelligence delivers meaningful economic and social impact.
