Opera, a global browser innovator, has introduced a significant privacy enhancement to Opera Mini with the launch of Locked Mode. This new feature enables PIN-protected browsing, offering users an extra layer of privacy protection and greater control over their mobile browsing experience.
Locked Mode allows users to set a PIN that is independent from their device’s main lock code. This secures tabs, history, and stored data, ensuring that personal information remains private. Users can now confidently share their phones with family and friends, knowing that their browsing data is protected and accessible only to them.
With a simple toggle switch, users can effortlessly switch between regular browsing and Locked Mode. This feature ensures that sensitive personal information, such as medical or financial statements, remains truly private. The introduction of Locked Mode represents a significant advancement in mobile browsing privacy.
Jørgen Arnesen, EVP of Mobile at Opera, highlighted the impact of this new feature: “Opera Mini’s new PIN-Locked Browsing and Private Downloads redefine how users experience the web on shared devices, ensuring that personal information remains personal. By focusing on what users need most – privacy and security – Opera Mini is setting new standards in mobile browsing.”
When activating Locked Mode for the first time, Opera Mini users will be prompted to set a unique PIN different from their device PIN. This enhances privacy control, especially for users who frequently share their unlocked devices with others. New tabs and data entered in Locked Mode are encrypted and accessible only when the correct PIN is entered.
Brand surveys conducted by Opera in markets such as Nigeria and Kenya reveal that privacy is the primary factor driving browser selection. More than 90 percent of users cited privacy as crucial. The introduction of PIN-Locked Browsing directly addresses these concerns, ensuring that unauthorized access is prevented and personal information remains confidential.
