Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has announced ambitious plans to deploy approximately 550 base stations as part of its accelerated network modernisation programme. This significant investment was revealed by Econet board chairperson James Myers during the release of the company’s earnings for the financial year ending February 29, 2024.
During the period under review, Econet leveraged strong relationships with key equipment manufacturers to expedite its network modernisation initiative. This progress comes after several years of underinvestment due to restricted foreign currency availability, highlighting a major step forward for the company.
Myers shared that Econet has successfully upgraded about 1,012 sites with high-capacity 4G base stations. Notably, 750 of these upgraded sites are strategically located in Harare, Bulawayo, and the entire Manicaland area, which borders Mozambique, ensuring enhanced connectivity in these regions.
The company’s modernisation efforts are set to continue with the planned deployment of an additional 550 base station sites across Zimbabwe. This expansion will significantly boost network coverage and capacity, meeting the growing demand for reliable and fast mobile services throughout the country.
Furthermore, Myers expressed gratitude to the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe for providing Econet with spectrum in the 700MHz frequency band. This allocation will enable existing base stations to extend their service reach beyond the current coverage areas, improving accessibility for more clients.
