MTN Uganda has introduced the Cashless School Days initiative at Kololo Secondary School, marking a new step toward digitizing student mobility and improving the daily school commute experience. The programme is designed to make transport safer, faster, and fully cash-free, while reducing common challenges faced by students and parents in managing school travel.

Developed in partnership with stakeholders across technology, mobility, and payments sectors, the initiative directly addresses issues such as long waiting times for transport, the risks associated with carrying cash, and concerns over student safety during daily commutes. It reflects a broader push to use digital solutions to improve everyday public service experiences in Uganda.

At the core of the solution is wearable wristband technology powered by MTN Business, enabling students to access school transport through a simple tap-and-go system. Registration is done via QR codes or USSD, with flexible transport pass options available on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. The system is fully integrated with MoMo Uganda, allowing parents to make seamless digital payments while maintaining visibility and control over transport expenses.

The initiative also highlights the growing role of digital ecosystems in education and mobility, bringing together partners such as MoMo Uganda, EBus Xpress Kiira Ltd, HelloBooth, and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Secretariat. A live demonstration during the launch showcased students using the system on a real bus journey, reinforcing its practicality and ease of use in real-world conditions.

By combining digital payments, wearable technology, and smart mobility solutions, MTN Uganda is advancing its broader mission of driving financial inclusion and digital transformation. The Cashless School Days initiative represents a shift toward smarter, safer, and more connected school environments, positioning students as active participants in Uganda’s evolving digital economy.
