Mozambique has officially launched its 5G journey, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation agenda and setting the stage for its ambition to become a leading digital hub in Southern Africa. The announcement was made during the National Communications Conference in Maputo, bringing together government leaders, regulators, technology stakeholders, and international partners to discuss the future of the nation’s digital economy.
President Daniel Francisco Chapo confirmed the allocation of radio spectrum to major mobile network operators, enabling the rollout of 5G services across the country. He described the move as a critical step in Mozambique’s modernization efforts, emphasizing that digital transformation is no longer just a technology initiative but a strategic driver of economic growth, social inclusion, national competitiveness, and digital sovereignty.
The government has outlined an ambitious phased deployment plan that aims to deliver 5G connectivity to provincial capitals, special economic zones, and major tourism destinations by 2027. The second phase will focus on expanding coverage to densely populated regions, with the long-term objective of achieving nationwide access, including all districts and administrative posts, by 2030. This roadmap demonstrates a clear commitment to ensuring that the benefits of advanced connectivity reach communities across the country.
Officials highlighted the transformative potential of 5G in accelerating innovation, improving productivity, and creating new economic opportunities across sectors such as education, healthcare, tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, and public services. At the same time, the government is encouraging the development of local digital solutions and technology ecosystems, recognizing the importance of homegrown innovation and talent in shaping Mozambique’s digital future.
The Mozambique Communications Regulatory Authority (INCM) reaffirmed its commitment to fostering innovation, fair competition, consumer protection, and resilient digital infrastructure as the country advances its digital ambitions. As discussions continue around artificial intelligence, network resilience, and next-generation technologies, Mozambique’s 5G rollout represents more than a connectivity upgrade—it signals a strategic investment in the country’s future as a competitive participant in the global knowledge economy.
