Mozambique Launches AI Association to Advance National Artificial Intelligence Ecosystem
Mozambique has launched a new industry association dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence (AI), bringing together stakeholders from government, the private sector, academia, research and civil society to support the development of the country’s emerging AI ecosystem.
The Mozambican Association of Artificial Intelligence (AMIA) was officially launched in Maputo, with the event opened by Lourino Chemane, Chairman of the Board of the National Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (INTIC). The launch also included the swearing-in of members of AMIA’s leadership bodies.
The association is expected to bring together government institutions, private companies, universities, researchers, technology professionals, entrepreneurs and civil society organisations to encourage collaboration around AI development and adoption.
AMIA will provide a platform for stakeholders to explore AI solutions that respond to Mozambique’s specific economic and social needs. Its formation comes as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly relevant across sectors including agriculture, healthcare, education, banking, manufacturing, commerce and public administration.
For Mozambique, AI is increasingly being viewed as a tool for improving public service delivery, supporting innovation and creating new economic opportunities, particularly for young people.
INTIC said the establishment of AMIA reflects the growing pool of professionals, academics, researchers and young innovators in Mozambique who have the capacity to contribute to the development of the country’s AI ecosystem.
The government is also developing policy frameworks to guide the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence. INTIC is coordinating the preparation of a proposed National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which is expected to provide direction for AI development and deployment across the country.
Alongside the proposed AI strategy, Mozambique is working on a National Data Governance Policy and Strategy, highlighting the importance of reliable and responsible data management in the development and deployment of AI technologies.
The Commercial and Investment Bank (BCI) has also expressed support for initiatives aimed at using technology to generate economic and social value, viewing AMIA as a potential platform for knowledge development, investment and greater confidence in AI applications.
The launch of AMIA marks another step in Mozambique’s efforts to establish the institutional, policy and skills foundations needed to participate in the growing regional and global AI economy.
