The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has taken a significant step toward bridging the digital divide through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Monacosat. Signed on November 12, 2024, by the Minister of Posts, Telecommunications, and Digital, Augustin Kibassa Maliba, and representatives from Monacosat, this partnership aims to implement a satellite connectivity project that promises to revolutionize digital access in the country. This collaboration also marks a milestone in digital cooperation between the DRC and the Principality of Monaco.

This groundbreaking initiative seeks to address the lack of access to digital tools in rural areas, providing nationwide satellite coverage that transcends the limitations of fiber optic and terrestrial networks. With the DRC’s vast geography and predominantly rural population, satellite connectivity is poised to deliver transformative benefits in areas where traditional infrastructure remains inaccessible.

The satellite project is designed to reduce the digital divide and extend the benefits of the internet to rural and remote communities. By improving access to information and communication technologies, it aims to enhance education and healthcare services. Students and teachers will have access to online resources and global expertise, while telemedicine and remote health consultations will bring critical healthcare services to isolated populations.

Beyond social impact, this project has profound economic implications. Internet access is a catalyst for economic development, enabling businesses to connect with global markets and fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. For the DRC, satellite connectivity represents an opportunity to stimulate growth, create jobs, and position itself as a regional provider of satellite capabilities, further strengthening its geostrategic importance in Central Africa.

The partnership also addresses the delays in implementing the DRC’s national backbone due to limited investment attractiveness. By leveraging satellite technology, the DRC can accelerate its digital transformation, ensuring that no citizen is left behind in the journey toward a connected future. The project also aligns with broader goals of democratization and human rights promotion by enabling citizens to access information, communicate, and engage in public life.

Minister Kibassa Maliba reaffirmed his commitment to the project, pledging to deploy a dedicated working team to ensure its successful implementation. This collaboration with Monacosat is not just a technological leap but a step toward inclusive and sustainable development for the DRC and its neighbors in the region.
