Girls-In-ICT Initiative Expands Across Ashanti Region

The Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation (MoCD) is championing digital inclusion with its impactful National Girls-In-ICT (GIICT) Programme in the Ashanti Region. This initiative, spearheaded by Naa Korkoi Essah, Head of Public Relations, aims to equip young girls with essential ICT skills, instill confidence, and prepare them for opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). By focusing on the theme of “Leadership,” the program is addressing the gender digital divide and fostering a culture of innovation among young girls in Ghana.

As part of its outreach efforts, the Ministry has been engaging with media outlets in Kumasi to amplify the program’s message. These engagements aim to raise awareness about the importance of empowering girls with digital skills and the transformative impact of ICT on personal and professional growth. This strategy ensures that the programme’s goals resonate with key stakeholders, including parents, educators, and community leaders.

Richard Asiamah, Regional Manager for the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), emphasized the government’s commitment to bridging the gender digital divide. He highlighted GIFEC’s active role in supporting the Girls-In-ICT Programme, showcasing the government’s dedication to promoting equality and innovation in the digital space. This partnership is crucial in expanding access to ICT for underserved communities and empowering the next generation of female leaders in technology.

Anthoinet Ohene-Amoah, a Web Master and Lecturer at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (GI-KACE), applauded the program for inspiring young girls to embrace technology and pursue careers in ICT. Her insights underscore the program’s role in shaping a future where more women actively participate and lead in the technology sector, contributing to national development and global competitiveness.

The programme’s outreach efforts extend beyond skills training. By engaging stakeholders at various levels, the Ministry is ensuring sustained support for the initiative and fostering an environment where girls can thrive in the digital economy. This holistic approach demonstrates a deep understanding of the barriers to female participation in ICT and a commitment to dismantling them systematically.
