Safaricom Plc, through its innovative youth platform, Safaricom Hook (S-Hook), has launched the ‘Safaricom Hook Circle,’ a nationwide series of upskilling bootcamps designed to empower young people across Kenya. These bootcamps focus on three key pillars: technology, careers, and culture, aiming to equip the youth with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in today’s dynamic environment. The inaugural event took place at Chuka University in Tharaka Nithi County, attracting over 4,000 participants eager to engage in masterclasses led by various expert partners.
Fawzia Ali, Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer, emphasized the initiative’s goal to connect youth throughout Kenya to opportunities that align with their interests and aspirations. She highlighted the collaboration with partners to provide valuable learning experiences in financial literacy, tech skills, career readiness, and cultural expression as pathways to income. This initiative aims to create a supportive ecosystem that nurtures young talent and fosters innovation in various fields.
The bootcamp featured a diverse range of sessions under the Culture Hook, where partners like Elevate, Baze Radio, Boomplay, and Artfit provided insights on how to monetize creative content and break into the arts and fashion industries. Participants gained practical knowledge on transforming their passions into viable careers, demonstrating the program’s commitment to enhancing the cultural landscape while empowering young creatives.
Under the Technology Hook, the bootcamp unpacked essential skills for a tech-driven future, facilitated by organizations such as Power Learn Project, Avunja Mobile, and Transsion. This segment aimed to prepare participants for the evolving demands of the digital economy, highlighting the importance of technological proficiency as a cornerstone for future success. The Career Hook further supported this vision by empowering attendees to pursue their career ambitions, with masterclasses provided by Brighter Monday, Wowzi, Trace Academia, ABSA, and Twiva.
Recognizing the importance of holistic development, the bootcamp also included mental health and financial literacy sessions, facilitated by Chiromo Hospital, Absa’s Ready to Work Program, and Old Mutual. These workshops addressed crucial life skills, ensuring participants are well-rounded and prepared for both professional and personal challenges.
Throughout the S-Hook Circle series, a total of 600 youth are expected to receive technology scholarships from Power Learn Project, while 4,000 will gain career training, alongside 15 internship opportunities facilitated by Brighter Monday. Additional support includes device financing from Transsion and influencer sales jobs for over 3,000 youth through Twiva. The initiative underscores Safaricom’s commitment to mentorship and development in tech, fashion, music, and other fields, fostering a brighter future for Kenya’s youth.
