TBD, a division of Block, has announced the launch of the TBD Hackathon in partnership with the Africa Bitcoin Conference. This innovative competition is designed to drive technological advancement in payment systems across Africa by leveraging the tbDEX open source protocol.

The submission period for the TBD Hackathon will open on July 31, 2024, and close on September 15, 2024. The final event will take place from December 9-11, 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya, during the Africa Bitcoin Conference.

The hackathon aims to unlock the potential of African developers and innovators by tackling issues such as limited banking access, high transaction fees, and inefficient cross-border payments. Participants will use the tbDEX protocol to create payment applications, supported by a sandbox of example Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs) for testing their solutions.

Teams of up to two people will develop their projects using the tbDEX SDK, with six finalist teams selected to present their solutions in Nairobi. The top three projects will receive significant prizes: $15,000 in BTC for first place, $10,000 in BTC for second place, and $5,000 in BTC for third place.

Angie Jones, Global VP of Developer Relations for TBD, encourages developers, entrepreneurs, and innovators from across Africa to join the competition. She emphasized that the TBD Hackathon is an ideal platform for creating the next generation of financial tools for the continent.

This initiative represents a major opportunity for African tech talent to contribute to the evolution of payment systems and drive meaningful change in financial inclusion across the region.
