Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) has launched its 7th edition of the National Science and Technology Annual Exhibition 2024, receiving an impressive 1,780 project abstracts focused on addressing climate change issues. Ben Roberts, Chairman of the YSK committee and Group Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Liquid Intelligent Technologies, highlighted a significant 138 percent increase in submissions compared to last year, underscoring growing interest and commitment to STEM education in Kenya.

Scheduled from August 19th to 23rd, 2024, this year’s exhibition is themed “Developing Sustainable Solutions for Climate Change,” emphasizing the critical role of innovation in tackling environmental challenges.

YSK aims to inspire and empower students by showcasing their scientific research and innovations, fostering STEM education, and creating pathways for further research and commercialization. Dr. Eng. Victor Mwongera, YSK National Director, emphasized how STEM education nurtures creativity and unconventional thinking among students, enabling them to develop technologies that solve real-world problems within their communities.

Since its inception, YSK has made a substantial impact, reaching over 250,000 students from more than 750 schools, including special needs institutions. The initiative has engaged over 750 teachers, established 600 STEM networks, and curated over 1,000 student projects, highlighting its role in advancing scientific literacy and innovation across Kenya.

Visiting Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence, Micheál Martin, commended YSK for its alignment with Ireland’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition (YSTE), noting its profound influence on Ireland’s economy and innovation landscape over six decades. He emphasized the exhibition’s role in nurturing young talent, promoting STEM education, and fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and entrepreneurship.

Martin expressed Ireland’s support for YSK’s mission, recognizing its potential to inspire young minds in Kenya and beyond, driving educational excellence, innovation, and sustainable development. He underscored the importance of investing in youth and their scientific pursuits as a means to address global challenges and spur economic growth through innovation.
