Bio-Logical, a Kenyan climate startup, has secured $1.3 million in funding to expand its Mount Kenya biochar facility, boosting production capacity and supporting smallholder farmers across the country. The funding round was led by CrossBoundary, Redshaw Advisors, and existing investors like the Steyn Group, marking a significant step towards scaling up operations.

Co-CEO Rory Buckworth expressed the company’s commitment to expanding the Mount Kenya facility and establishing three new sites in Kenya within the next 18 months. This expansion aims to enhance carbon sequestration efforts and improve the resilience of smallholder farmers against climate change impacts.

Founded in 2022 by Rory Buckworth and Philip Hunter, Bio-Logical utilizes technology to sequester carbon from agricultural waste, converting it into soil-regenerating fertilizers. This approach not only mitigates carbon emissions but also boosts crop yields and resilience to climate variability among Kenyan farmers.

Louis Redshaw, CEO of Redshaw Advisors, emphasized the strategic importance of supporting Bio-Logical’s funding round. He highlighted the dual benefit of creating high-integrity carbon removal credits while providing crucial climate resilience solutions to farmers in need.

The investment underscores growing interest in climate tech startups in Africa, with substantial funding reaching $325 million in 2024 alone. Kenya has emerged as a leader in this sector, accounting for a significant portion of climate tech funding in Africa, reflecting its role in pioneering sustainable solutions.

Analysis by startup funding tracker Africa, The Big Deal, reveals a significant upward trend in climate tech investments over the past five years, underscoring increasing global recognition of Africa’s potential in driving climate innovation.
