Prompt-driven artificial intelligence is no longer enough to deliver the reliability, governance and scalability that modern enterprises require, according to Accelera Digital Group (ADG), which says businesses must now shift towards autonomous AI agents supported by human oversight to remain competitive.

Cliff de Wit, Chief Innovation Officer at ADG, said organisations have spent too much time focusing on prompt engineering instead of redesigning business processes around AI agents capable of running continuous workflows. He argued that the next phase of enterprise AI is centred on “human-in-the-loop AI,” where autonomous systems execute routine tasks while people provide oversight for compliance, ethics and critical decision-making.

The approach aligns with findings from Google Cloud’s AI Agent Trends 2026 Report, which highlights a global shift from isolated prompts to multi-agent systems capable of managing complete business processes. ADG noted that while AI agents can automate complex workflows, they still require human judgement in areas such as POPIA compliance, credit approvals, healthcare and legal reviews where ethical and regulatory considerations remain essential.

According to ADG, organisations already applying this hybrid model are seeing measurable benefits. In banking, AI agents are supporting fraud detection while humans validate complex cases. Retailers are using agents to optimise inventory and logistics with people overseeing customer experience, while public sector organisations are combining automated case management with human accountability to ensure fairness and constitutional compliance.

The company believes businesses should now invest in training employees to supervise and orchestrate AI agents rather than simply writing prompts. ADG also recommends strengthening governance through oversight frameworks, intelligent approval checkpoints and existing Delegation of Authority structures to ensure AI systems remain secure, accountable and aligned with organisational objectives.
