Simba Corporation has achieved a significant milestone by delivering the first all-electric Mahindra XUV400 SUVs to Kenya Power, underscoring a key step towards sustainable mobility in Kenya. This marks the beginning of a broader initiative to incorporate electric vehicles into Kenya Power’s fleet, with a total of six electric vehicles acquired this year and plans to expand to nine electric vehicles and 25 electric motorcycles by December 2024.
In April 2024, Kenya Power announced a substantial investment of Sh258 million towards e-mobility as part of its comprehensive strategy to electrify its fleet. This investment reflects the firm’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing environmental sustainability. David Mugambi, Kenya Power’s head of transport, emphasized the firm’s long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality and its ongoing efforts over the past eight years to transition to electric material handling equipment.
Kenya Power’s transition is supported by the country’s robust green energy infrastructure, with over 92 percent of its energy generated from clean sources. This provides a strong foundation for the adoption of electric vehicles. Mugambi highlighted the importance of reducing emissions in the transport sector to meet environmental goals and improve air quality, making this EV transition a pivotal moment in their sustainability journey.
Kenya is rapidly positioning itself as a leader in electric vehicle adoption in Africa, currently boasting approximately 2,100 electric vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers. The country’s installed energy capacity of 3,246 MW, significantly exceeding the peak demand of 2,300 MW, ensures that there is ample energy to support the growth of the electric vehicle market. This transition is expected to reduce energy costs and enhance the quality of life for Kenyans by leveraging local energy resources.
Naresh Leekha, group managing director of Simba Corporation’s Motors Division, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for Kenya’s EV journey with the introduction of Mahindra electric vehicles. He noted that Kenya Power’s adoption of the Mahindra XUV400 SUVs represents a significant step forward in embracing environmentally friendly vehicles. Leekha emphasized Simba Corporation’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s shift towards sustainable transportation solutions.
The introduction of these electric vehicles by Simba Corporation to Kenya Power is a testament to the growing momentum of e-mobility in Kenya. It reflects a broader global trend towards environmentally friendly vehicles and positions Kenya as a key player in the African electric vehicle market. The ongoing commitment to expanding the electric vehicle fleet is expected to drive further advancements in sustainable transportation.
