The United States Department of Energy has unveiled ambitious investment plans to bolster Kenya’s transition to green energy, with a focus on e-mobility and clean power generation. Deputy Secretary David Turk highlighted Kenya’s exceptional potential in renewable energy, with 93% of electricity already sourced from renewables, including world-leading geothermal resources.

Turk emphasized the US government’s partnership with Kenya to enhance the policy and capacity infrastructure crucial for attracting investments in clean energy. This collaborative effort aims not only at financing but also at creating an enabling environment that maximizes Kenya’s comparative advantage in sustainable energy.

In alignment with these goals, Kenya recently launched the Kenya Green Resilient Electricity System Programme, supported by Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir and European Commissioner Kadri Simson. This initiative aims to accelerate Kenya’s transition to 100% clean power generation by 2030, enhancing grid stability and efficiency through strategic investments.

Kenya’s energy mix currently includes 47% geothermal, 30% hydro, 12% wind, and 2% solar, underscoring its robust commitment to renewable sources. KenGen estimates Kenya’s geothermal capacity could reach 10,000 MW, significantly exceeding current peak demand of 2,000 MW.

The US Department of Energy’s pledge underscores its recognition of Kenya’s leadership in renewable energy and its commitment to supporting sustainable development. This strategic partnership is poised to drive innovation, economic growth, and environmental sustainability in Kenya’s energy sector.
