Gabon has unveiled an ambitious push to accelerate its national digital transformation agenda, backed by a 2026 budget allocation of XAF 82 billion (approximately $133 million). The investment underscores the government’s strategy to place digital technology at the center of economic diversification, sovereignty, and long-term competitiveness.

The initiative forms part of Gabon’s broader 2025–2030 digital development plan, which is closely aligned with its national development framework and international commitments, including collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The strategy is designed to position the digital economy as a key driver of job creation and sustainable growth across multiple sectors.

According to the Minister of Digital Economy, Digitalisation and Innovation, Mark-Alexandre Doumba, the plan is anchored on four core priorities: expanding digital infrastructure, accelerating public service digitalisation, strengthening cybersecurity systems, and supporting innovation ecosystems that foster entrepreneurship and private sector expansion. These pillars are intended to modernize governance and improve service delivery nationwide.

A significant portion of the XAF 82 billion allocation will go toward scaling national digital infrastructure, upgrading public administration systems, and deploying digital platforms that enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility of government services. Existing initiatives such as the GIMAC programme and the Magadipe digitalisation platform are also expected to play a key role in expanding financial inclusion and enabling secure digital payments for citizens and businesses.

Despite notable progress in e-government and financial inclusion initiatives, Gabon continues to face infrastructure challenges, including internet penetration rates below 60%. The new investment is expected to address these gaps while strengthening international partnerships, enhancing digital capacity, and positioning Gabon as a more influential participant in global digital governance and technology policy discussions.
