Airtel Africa has commercially launched Starlink’s satellite-to-mobile service in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), marking the first commercial deployment of the technology by a telecommunications operator in Africa.
The service enables eligible Airtel customers with compatible smartphones to connect directly to Starlink satellites in areas where conventional terrestrial mobile coverage is unavailable. Users require a clear view of the sky, while the initial service supports light-data applications including WhatsApp messaging and SMS.
Unlike traditional satellite connectivity, the service does not require customers to purchase a satellite dish or specialised terminal. Airtel customers currently need a compatible LTE Android smartphone and an active Airtel DRC data bundle or data roaming.
The rollout could prove particularly valuable for remote communities and industries operating in areas where conventional network infrastructure is difficult or costly to deploy. Potential users include mining companies, agricultural communities, transport operators, healthcare workers and humanitarian organisations.
The commercial launch in the DRC follows Airtel Africa and Starlink’s partnership announced in December 2025, with testing of data and messaging services previously conducted in Kenya.
The development also represents an early commercial test of satellite-to-mobile technology as African operators explore new ways to extend connectivity beyond conventional mobile networks. Airtel Africa said further expansion across its markets will depend on country-specific regulatory approvals.
