MojaEV, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, has launched its first EVs in Kenya, targeting cab drivers with a range of Neta variant SUVs and mid-level consumer cars. The full launch is scheduled for mid-June, aligning with the government’s agenda of promoting sustainable transport and reducing pollution.
Annet Githinji, MojaEV’s marketing executive, highlighted the significant benefits for taxi drivers, emphasizing that EVs will help maximize profits due to their cost-effectiveness. “Drivers are keen to shift to EVs because they offer affordable fuel options and are more income-friendly,” she explained.
The Neta variant EVs can drive up to 300 kilometers on a full charge and support home-charging, a feature MojaEV plans to leverage as a key selling point in the market.
Looking ahead, MojaEV is considering expanding its offerings to include two-wheelers for boda boda riders, aiming to capture a broader customer base in Kenya’s transportation sector.
To facilitate access to EVs, MojaEV is exploring partnerships with Equity and NCBA Bank to offer financing options specifically tailored for taxi drivers.
Kenya has seen a rising adoption of EVs, supported by initiatives from government agencies like Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), which are rolling out tenders for the supply of EVs.
