The Treasury has proposed a significant Sh5.2 billion allocation to Konza Technopolis for the establishment of a state-of-the-art data centre and other crucial facilities in the upcoming fiscal year, marking a substantial increase from the current budget.
The allocation, up from Sh170 million in the current year, underscores the government’s commitment to advancing digital infrastructure at Konza Technopolis, Kenya’s flagship technology city.
The proposed budget will be primarily funded by appropriations in aid, amounting to Sh4.95 billion, with only Sh205 million billed to the taxpayer, reflecting a strategic leveraging of resources.
A data centre is pivotal for centralizing IT operations and equipment, facilitating data storage, processing, and dissemination, which are crucial for businesses handling large amounts of data remotely.
Once operational, the Konza data centre will address the escalating demand for cloud computing services, digital transformation, and edge computing applications across various sectors of the economy.
The facility will provide critical services such as Software as a Service (SaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), and Platform as a Service (PaaS) to private enterprises and government agencies, bolstering Kenya’s digital infrastructure.
