The Italian government, led by Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, unveiled a comprehensive near-US$6 billion plan during the Italy-Africa summit in Rome. The initiatives aim to strengthen economic ties, establish an energy hub for Europe, and address African emigration to Europe.
The pledge includes an initial commitment of €5.5 billion (US$5.95 billion), signaling Italy’s ambition to foster a cooperative and equal partnership with Africa. While African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki welcomed the support, he emphasized the importance of prior consultation with the African continent during the planning stages of such initiatives.
Prime Minister Meloni, calling for a new Italian partnership with Africa, expressed a vision of collaboration among equals, positioning Italy as a bridge between Africa and Europe. The summit, coinciding with Italy’s assumption of the G7 Presidency, reflects a strategic move to play a significant role in shaping the future relationship between the two continents.
In response, President William Ruto highlighted the pressing need for additional funds to address the energy shortfall in Africa, emphasizing the continent’s target to increase renewable capacity to at least 300 GW by 2030, a crucial step in achieving energy security for millions lacking electricity access in Sub-Saharan Africa.
