Airtel Nigeria has expanded its retail footprint to more than 200,000 customer touchpoints and over 4,000 exclusive shops nationwide as the country’s second-largest telecom operator strengthens customer access and service delivery amid growing demand for digital services.

The expanded retail network is expected to improve access to essential services, including SIM registration, airtime and data purchases, device sales, customer support and other digital offerings through a network of partner stores, neighbourhood agents and channel partners. The move forms part of Airtel’s broader strategy to enhance customer acquisition and improve service accessibility across Nigeria.

The expansion comes as Nigeria’s telecommunications sector continues to record strong growth. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the telecommunications and information services sector contributed ₦18.47 trillion (US$13.4 billion) to Nigeria’s real GDP in 2025, accounting for 8.34% of the economy and ranking as the country’s fourth-largest contributor. Rising mobile and broadband adoption has also driven demand, with Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) data showing active mobile subscriptions reaching 188 million and broadband subscriptions surpassing 120 million in April 2026.

As of April 2026, Airtel Nigeria serves 64.7 million subscribers, representing approximately 34.4% of the country’s mobile market and maintaining its position as Nigeria’s second-largest mobile operator behind MTN. The company said expanding its retail presence enables it to bring services closer to customers while delivering a more consistent and accessible experience nationwide.

The retail expansion complements Airtel Nigeria’s continued investment in network infrastructure. Earlier this year, the operator revealed that it had increased its network footprint from just over 13,000 sites to nearly 17,200 over the past three years, including the deployment of more than 1,500 new base stations in the last year to improve coverage and network capacity. Beyond strengthening customer access, the expanded retail ecosystem is also expected to create more opportunities for distributors, retailers and small businesses that support Airtel’s nationwide sales and service network.
