Motorcycle taxis in Africa show significant potential for electrification amid the rising popularity of electric two- and three-wheelers, as highlighted in a recent report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Tom Courtright, Research Director at Africa e-Mobility Alliance, emphasized this during a virtual report launch on January 10th, emphasizing the expected dominance of commercial two-wheelers, particularly in densely populated urban areas. Despite being less common in certain markets like Botswana, motorcycle taxis are increasingly popular in regions like the East African Community, with up to 5 million operational units.

Electric two-wheelers emerge as a promising segment for electrification due to factors such as their growing number, lower costs, and higher efficiency compared to four-wheelers. Notably, converting motorcycles to electric vehicles is significantly more affordable than converting four-wheelers, making them key players in promoting cleaner transportation options. However, challenges such as limited grid infrastructure, high capital costs, and financing issues hinder the full-scale growth of this sector, highlighting the need for tax incentives to unlock its potential.
