Vodacom KwaZulu-Natal has announced a capital expenditure of 1 billion South African rand for network infrastructure during the 2027 financial year. The strategic funding aim is to expand network coverage, boost capacity, improve resilience and prepare the province for future technologies. This initiative builds on the 1.1 billion rand invested in the region during the previous financial year, addressing the increasing demand for data and digital services across South Africa second most populous province.

A major portion of the allocation, approximately 419 million rand, is designated for radio network expansion and modernisation. This encompasses new site builds, LTE and 5G upgrades, as well as capacity enhancements across urban centres, townships and deep rural regions. The infrastructure rollout spans several municipalities, including eThekwini, uMzimkhulu, Msunduzi, uMvoti, uMhlathuze, Nkandla, eMsinga, iMpendle, Richmond and eDumbe. Furthermore, over 173 million rand will be directed towards transmission infrastructure, comprising fibre and microwave upgrades to support growing broadband demand.

To maintain network operational availability during power interruptions caused by municipal failures, localised load reduction and cable theft, 63.5 million rand has been committed to an energy resilience programme. This includes deploying backup generators, batteries and secondary power systems. Alongside physical infrastructure, the company is attempting to lower affordability barriers through tailored products, including the RED contract portfolio, personalised offerings via Just4You and Just4YourTown, and smartphone financing through the Easy2Own initiative to migrate users from legacy 2G and 3G networks to 4G and 5G.

Imran Khan, managing executive for Vodacom KwaZulu-Natal region, stated that the investment demonstrates a firm commitment to connecting people, communities and businesses across the province. Khan noted that modernising and expanding the network lays the foundation for future technologies while addressing digital inequality through wider broadband access, creating an environment where everyone can participate in the digital economy. Additionally, the Vodacom Business division is expanding its core digital strategy for public and private sector clients, providing integrated cloud, cybersecurity, Internet of Things and unified communication solutions, including a Case Management platform currently deployed across local municipalities.
