MTN Uganda Partners with EBus Xpress to Launch Electric, Cashless Bus Route in Kira
MTN Uganda has partnered with EBus Xpress Kiira Ltd to launch a new electric bus route in Kira Municipality, combining sustainable public transportation with cashless digital payments.
The new route is designed to provide passengers with a more comfortable and convenient travel experience while supporting Uganda’s transition towards sustainable mobility. Through the initiative, commuters will be able to make cashless payments for their journeys, reducing reliance on physical cash while improving convenience.
The partnership brings together electric mobility, connectivity and digital financial services as part of broader efforts to develop smarter and more efficient public transportation systems.
Speaking at the launch, Ibrahim Senyonga, General Manager of the Enterprise Business Unit at MTN Uganda, highlighted the role of digital payments in improving the commuter experience and enabling more convenient journeys.
The launch was attended by Rt. Hon. Eng. Asiimwe Jonard, Minister in the Office of the President responsible for Science, Technology and Innovation, and Minsa Kabanda, Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs.
By combining electric buses with digital payment solutions, MTN Uganda and EBus Xpress aim to support the development of more sustainable, connected and accessible transport options for commuters.
The initiative reflects the growing role of technology in reshaping public transportation across Africa, where cities and governments are increasingly exploring electric mobility and digital services to address urban transport challenges.
As Uganda continues to advance its sustainable mobility agenda, partnerships between telecommunications companies, transport providers and public institutions could play an important role in accelerating the adoption of cleaner and more efficient transportation solutions.
