Geneva hosted a pivotal week for global AI governance, bringing together governments, technology companies, multilateral organisations and policymakers to shape the future of artificial intelligence. For Africa, the discussions marked growing influence in global AI decision-making, stronger commitments to digital skills and connectivity, and renewed momentum behind national AI strategies.
However, the conversations also underscored a critical challenge: while representation is improving, access to AI compute infrastructure, high-performance computing resources and advanced AI capabilities remains limited. As global AI development accelerates, ensuring Africa has the infrastructure needed to build, deploy and benefit from AI will be essential to translating policy ambitions into meaningful economic and technological progress.
