Uganda Airlines is preparing for a major phase of growth with plans to acquire 10 new aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, a move that could significantly expand the national carrier’s passenger and cargo operations. To support the acquisition, the Ministry of Works and Transport has requested a supplementary budget allocation, marking one of the most ambitious fleet expansion initiatives undertaken by the airline since its revival.
The proposed fleet will consist of four narrow-body Airbus aircraft for regional and medium-haul routes, four wide-body Boeing aircraft to support long-haul international operations, and two Boeing converted freighters aimed at strengthening cargo transport capabilities. The expansion reflects Uganda Airlines’ broader strategy to increase route capacity, improve connectivity, and position itself as a stronger competitor in Africa’s growing aviation market.
According to the Ministry of Works and Transport, the requested funding will primarily cover pre-delivery payments required to secure manufacturing slots with Airbus and Boeing. Officials emphasized that global demand for new aircraft remains extremely high, making early deposits essential to guarantee production timelines. The government argues that securing these slots now is critical to ensuring the airline can receive the aircraft within the planned delivery schedule and continue its long-term growth trajectory.
The proposal, however, has also attracted scrutiny from lawmakers who questioned the use of supplementary funding for a project of this magnitude. Members of Parliament raised concerns about whether the acquisition qualifies as an emergency expenditure and called for greater planning and transparency in the budgeting process. Legislators also sought assurances regarding the sustainability of the investment and the long-term availability of maintenance support and spare parts for the new aircraft fleet.
If approved, the acquisition would represent a significant investment in Uganda’s aviation sector and could strengthen the country’s position as a regional transport and logistics hub. Beyond expanding passenger services, the addition of dedicated cargo aircraft has the potential to enhance trade, support exports, and unlock new economic opportunities. The parliamentary review process now moves to the next stage as stakeholders evaluate both the strategic benefits and financial implications of the proposed fleet expansion.
