Absa and South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs have launched the country’s first bank-based mobile Smart ID branch, marking a significant milestone in expanding access to digital identity services by bringing government services closer to underserved communities.

The mobile unit, unveiled at the Mall of Tembisa, enables citizens to apply for Smart ID cards, complete biometric enrolment and collect their identity documents without visiting a Home Affairs office. Built on an Iveco truck, the branch is designed to serve remote, peri-urban and historically underserved communities, providing the same paperless and digitally integrated application process available in participating bank branches.

The launch also marks Absa’s official entry into the Department of Home Affairs’ Digital Partnership programme, becoming the fourth banking partner after Capitec, FNB and Standard Bank. Since the programme became operational in March 2026, Smart ID service points have increased from 214 to 541 locations, with the Department targeting approximately 750 participating bank branches by the end of the year.

According to the Department of Home Affairs, the revamped Digital Partnership allows banks to manage day-to-day Smart ID branch operations through secure digital integration with government systems. The model leverages banks’ biometric infrastructure, secure facilities and nationwide branch networks to expand access to identity services while improving efficiency and reducing operational costs. Absa has already introduced Smart ID services in more than a dozen branches and plans to expand the offering to approximately 60 branches by the end of 2026.

The initiative forms part of South Africa’s broader strategy to replace the country’s green barcoded identity book with the more secure Smart ID card. The rollout also highlights the country’s growing collaboration between government and the private sector to improve access to public services, strengthen digital identity and support greater financial inclusion by extending essential government services beyond traditional Home Affairs offices.
