Cameroon’s National Agency for Information and Communication Technologies (ANTIC) has urged municipal councils in the North West Region to accelerate their digital transformation efforts, emphasizing that stronger digital adoption is essential to improving public service delivery and citizen engagement.
Speaking during the opening of a three-day ICT capacity-building seminar for municipal councils, ANTIC Director General Professor Ebot Ebot Enaw revealed that only 48.6% of councils in the region currently operate functional websites, while social media adoption remains limited. He warned that without stronger digital platforms, local governments risk falling behind in delivering efficient, transparent and accessible public services.
Held under the theme “Local Development in the Era of Digital Transformation,” the seminar has brought together mayors and ICT administrators from councils across the North West Region’s seven divisions. The programme aims to strengthen digital skills, enhance administrative efficiency and improve communication between local authorities and citizens through modern technology.
According to ANTIC, expanding digital platforms will enable residents to access council services online, monitor administrative processes remotely and reduce the need for physical visits. The agency also highlighted the potential of digital transformation to modernize civil registration systems, automate local revenue collection and improve transparency while reducing revenue leakages.
ANTIC noted that it has already supported 230 councils—approximately 64% of councils nationwide—in deploying digital solutions, including secure National Civil Status Registry platforms. Working alongside MINDDEVEL, FEICOM, BUNEC and ARMP, the agency aims to accelerate the digital transformation of local governments and strengthen citizen-centred public service delivery across Cameroon.
