India’s Bharti airtel has surpassed 650 million customers, becoming the world’s second-largest mobile operator by subscriber base, according to GSMA Intelligence. The milestone reflects the company’s growing scale across India and Africa, two of the fastest-growing telecom markets globally, with over 368 million users in India and 179 million across 14 African countries. This achievement underscores Airtel’s continued expansion and its strategic focus on connecting more people through innovative digital and telecom services.

Airtel has been investing heavily in next-generation networks and digital offerings to drive growth. In India, the company has rolled out 5G Plus services alongside platforms such as Xstream AirFiber and IPTV, serving over 13 million broadband homes and more than 15 million digital TV customers. These initiatives are designed to meet rising demand for high-speed data and premium digital experiences, positioning Airtel as a leader in the rapidly evolving telecom landscape.

The company is also expanding its enterprise segment through Airtel Business, providing cloud computing, cybersecurity, SD-WAN, and Internet of Things solutions. Its infrastructure includes over 400,000 route kilometres of subsea cables and a network of Nxtra data centres, enabling robust enterprise connectivity. In addition, Airtel is entering the non-banking financial services sector, offering credit and financial products via its mobile app, further diversifying revenue streams and enhancing digital inclusion.

In Africa, Airtel continues to scale its Airtel Money platform, which now serves over 52 million users. The platform provides mobile payments and banking services in markets with limited access to traditional financial systems. Airtel is also investing in satellite-based connectivity in partnership with Eutelsat, OneWeb, and SpaceX, aiming to provide broadband access to remote and underserved areas, further strengthening its presence across the continent.

Executive Vice Chairman Gopal Vittal highlighted that reaching 650 million customers carries great responsibility. Airtel remains committed to investing in network quality, customer experience, and innovative digital solutions. The company’s growth reflects broader industry trends, where emerging markets in Asia and Africa are driving mobile adoption, digital services, and financial inclusion at an unprecedented scale.
