Airtel Money and FNB Zambia have launched a groundbreaking partnership that enables customers to make direct payments from their mobile wallets at any FNB Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal. This initiative marks a significant milestone in Zambia’s journey toward financial inclusion, bridging the gap between mobile money users and traditional banking infrastructure. By allowing seamless, cardless transactions, the partnership aims to make everyday payments—whether for groceries, bills, or small business purchases—simpler and more accessible to millions of Zambians.
Kapumpe Chola, CEO of FNB Zambia, emphasized that this collaboration empowers customers with instant, convenient payment options while supporting merchants and small businesses across the country. The initiative is designed to connect mobile money ecosystems with formal banking, ensuring that more Zambians can access secure, efficient financial services. By responding directly to customer needs, FNB Zambia and Airtel Money are creating a solution that fosters economic participation and convenience.
Airtel Zambia, the country’s second-largest mobile network operator with over 8.5 million subscribers, highlighted the role of interoperability in accelerating digital transformation. Andrew Chuma, Airtel Money Zambia’s country director, noted that this partnership supports merchants, enhances convenience, and contributes to Zambia’s transition toward a cashless economy. The integration of Airtel Money with FNB’s network of over 5,000 POS terminals ensures that financial services reach urban and rural consumers alike.
Deputy Governor of the Bank of Zambia, Rekha Chifuwe Mhango, praised the collaboration as a critical step toward national digital inclusion goals. She noted that partnerships like this strengthen interoperability, advance responsible innovation, and expand access to formal financial services for those still operating in cash-based systems. By aligning with regulatory objectives, Airtel Money and FNB Zambia are helping to create a more inclusive and digitally empowered economy.
With Zambia’s mobile money transactions exceeding $20 billion in 2024, this first-of-its-kind service opens new opportunities for micro-merchants and everyday consumers to pay, save, and engage in the digital economy. By combining Airtel Money’s fintech ecosystem with FNB’s extensive POS infrastructure, the partnership is setting a new standard for accessible and interoperable financial services in the country.
