Zambia is taking a bold step toward a fully digital future with the launch of a smart office customisation workshop in Chilanga District. Spearheaded by SMART Zambia Institute, this initiative marks a critical phase in the government’s broader strategy to go paperless, in line with the Ministry of Technology and Science’s directive to all tech agencies. The workshop aims to equip public offices with digital solutions that streamline processes and eliminate inefficiencies caused by outdated paper systems.
One of the most compelling drivers of this transition is cost reduction. Percy Chinyama, National Coordinator for SMART Zambia, revealed that the government currently spends close to ZMW400 million (approximately $15 million) annually on stationery alone. By adopting smart office technologies, the government stands to significantly cut costs while improving service delivery, document tracking, and information management.
Beyond the financial savings, the paperless initiative is also expected to enhance accountability and transparency in government operations. Digital records are more secure and less susceptible to tampering or misplacement, reducing corruption risks and building public trust. This shift could lead to a more efficient, reliable public service experience for Zambians.
However, the path to full implementation won’t be without challenges. Chinyama acknowledged that the biggest barrier isn’t technology—it’s people. Transitioning to a digital-first culture demands training, mindset shifts, and sustained leadership. The success of this initiative will largely depend on how well the change is embraced at every level of government.
If executed effectively, the benefits for citizens could be transformative. Shorter queues, faster processing times, and fewer missing documents could redefine how Zambians interact with public services.
