Power Learn Project (PLP), a leading Pan-African social impact organization, celebrated the graduation of 7,859 learners under its #1MillionDevs4Africa initiative on Friday, bringing the total number of graduates to 14,123 across the continent. This milestone highlights PLP’s continued dedication to empowering African youth through digital skills development, bridging the gap between education and employment in a rapidly changing job market.

In Kenya, the demand for digital skills is increasing, with sectors such as technology, e-commerce, fintech, and creative industries driving job creation. However, challenges remain in transitioning from education to employment, particularly for young professionals seeking to enter these thriving sectors. The PLP Talent Hub is designed to address this gap, offering graduates a platform to access job opportunities, freelance projects, and resources for entrepreneurship, helping them navigate the job market successfully.

The launch of the PLP Talent Hub in Nairobi marks the culmination of a year-long series of graduation celebrations across Africa, starting in Nigeria in November 2024. This milestone event reflects PLP’s role as a catalyst for digital transformation, not only in Kenya but across the continent. The initiative continues to empower young people by connecting them to meaningful opportunities and fostering their potential to contribute to Africa’s growing digital economy.

PLP’s efforts also extend to underserved communities through localized training programs. The Kilifi County Model in Kenya, for instance, trained 350 learners and employed 50 graduates to digitize county operations, demonstrating the transformative power of digital skills at the local level. A second cohort of the Kilifi project is set to launch in 2025, expanding its impact and offering more young people the chance to develop essential skills for the digital economy.

During the graduation ceremony, Mumbi Ndungu, Executive Director of PLP, emphasized the importance of the Talent Hub in bridging the gap between education and employment. The platform is designed to provide graduates with dignified livelihood opportunities, whether through formal employment, freelance work, or entrepreneurial ventures. Ndungu reaffirmed PLP’s commitment to inclusivity, equity, and empowering every young African to thrive in the digital economy.

The event was attended by leaders from the tech and education sectors, including Mary Kerema, Secretary for ICT, E-Government and Digital Economy in Kenya’s Ministry of IC&DE, Fawzia Ali Kimanthi, Chief Consumer Business at Safaricom PLC, and Phyllis Migwi, Country General Manager for Microsoft Kenya. Their participation underscores the importance of partnerships in driving inclusive economic growth and preparing young Africans for the opportunities emerging in the digital economy.
