Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has announced a significant advancement in the nation’s power infrastructure with the signing of a deal to construct a new National System Control Center (NSCC) in Embakasi, Nairobi. This facility is set to enhance the stability, reliability, and efficiency of Kenya’s national power grid, addressing the critical need for an upgraded electricity transmission system. The project comes in response to frequent blackouts that have disrupted daily life and affected businesses across the country.
Kenya has been grappling with power outages, some of which have been attributed to disturbances in the national grid. Notably, these blackouts have severely impacted key facilities, including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), leading to significant disruptions in flights and passenger services. The establishment of the NSCC aims to mitigate these challenges by providing a centralized hub for managing electricity supply and improving the overall resilience of the national grid.
The NSCC project, with a budget of €80.7 million (approximately Ksh.11.6 billion), is expected to be completed within 36 months. This state-of-the-art facility will not only enhance monitoring capabilities but also offer advanced tools for effective grid management. Additionally, a backup facility will be constructed at KETRACO’s Suswa substation, ensuring operational continuity during emergencies and managing asset performance.
KETRACO has emphasized that this project will be the first of its kind in the region, playing a pivotal role in reducing power outages and improving grid reliability. The NSCC will also facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources into the electricity system, aligning with Kenya’s vision for a sustainable energy future. This initiative underscores KETRACO’s commitment to expanding electricity access and improving power quality for all Kenyans.
The funding for this ambitious project comes from Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the French Ministry of Finance, highlighting international support for Kenya’s energy sector development. With KETRACO established in 2008, the company has been at the forefront of building and maintaining high-voltage power transmission lines across the country, and the new NSCC will further bolster its efforts.
As Kenya continues to strive for reliable energy access, the NSCC stands as a critical step towards ensuring that businesses, homes, and essential facilities like JKIA are safeguarded against the disruptions caused by power outages. This project marks a pivotal move in securing a more stable and efficient electricity supply for the nation.
