MTC Namibia, a prominent telecom provider, has partnered with U2opia Mobile, an Indian technology firm, to launch an innovative electronic learning (e-learning) initiative known as Upskill-Hub. This program aims to address the significant skills gap in Namibia by providing accessible and affordable learning opportunities for over 5 million MTC members. The collaboration represents a strategic effort to empower students and young professionals with the skills necessary to thrive in a competitive job market.
The Upskill-Hub platform offers an extensive library featuring more than 17 courses and over 350 instructional videos, covering a wide array of subjects crucial for modern employment. The program is designed to be cost-effective, with course combinations starting at just N$3 (approximately US$0.17) per day. This affordability ensures that financial constraints do not hinder young Namibians from acquiring valuable knowledge and skills.
Carlos Manuel, project manager at MTC Namibia, emphasized that Upskill-Hub serves as a critical tool for bridging the skills gap among the youth. He noted that the initiative not only empowers learners with essential knowledge but also builds their confidence, ultimately helping them secure meaningful employment and build brighter futures. This focus on practical, job-oriented skills is crucial for enhancing the employability of young people in Namibia.
The course offerings include in-demand technical skills such as Python programming, Tableau, and Adobe Photoshop, which are essential for succeeding in the digital economy. Additionally, Upskill-Hub provides training in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, website design, and internet marketing. By equipping learners with these skills, MTC Namibia and U2opia Mobile are contributing to the development of a digitally skilled workforce.
Meghna Gupta, Assistant Vice President at U2opia Mobile, highlighted the transformative nature of the collaboration, stating that Upskill-Hub is revolutionizing education by offering a diverse range of accessible and affordable courses in multiple languages. This commitment to inclusivity ensures that more learners can benefit from high-quality educational resources.
As MTC Namibia and U2opia Mobile embark on this impactful journey, they are setting a precedent for how telecommunications and technology can work together to foster education and skills development in Southern Africa. The Upskill-Hub initiative not only addresses immediate educational needs but also plays a vital role in shaping the future workforce of Namibia.
