Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. recently engaged in a virtual discussion with Elon Musk, CEO of Starlink, regarding the potential launch of Starlink’s satellite internet service in Liberia. This meeting underscores President Boakai’s dedication to fostering collaboration and advancing Liberia’s technological landscape.

During the virtual meeting, Musk highlighted Starlink’s success across over 10 African countries and its potential to significantly impact various sectors in Liberia, including education, healthcare, and rural connectivity. The proposed launch aims to address the pressing need for improved internet access in the country.

Liberia currently faces challenges with low internet penetration, with only about 30% of its 5.3 million residents having access at the beginning of the year. Furthermore, internet speeds are below global standards, with median fixed connection speeds around 7.14 MB/s and high costs for broadband services. Monthly fees for basic broadband average $2.63, and data prices in 2023 ranged from $1.67 to $14.5 per 1GB, significantly higher than the global average of $3.12.

The existing telecom sector, led by Lonestar Cell MTN and Orange Liberia, has encountered difficulties expanding services to rural areas due to infrastructural and financial barriers. This digital divide continues to impede socio-economic development, highlighting the need for innovative solutions.

The potential introduction of Starlink’s satellite internet could play a pivotal role in bridging this gap, offering a more reliable and accessible connectivity solution for Liberians. The initiative aligns with Liberia’s commitment to improving digital infrastructure and fostering economic growth.

As Liberia seeks to enhance its connectivity and integration into the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the collaboration with Starlink could be a significant step forward in achieving these goals.
