Gold Fields, a leading global gold producer, has successfully migrated its end-to-end SAP and treasury systems to AWS, marking a significant step in its technological modernization journey. This migration will enable Gold Fields to leverage AWS’s advanced analytics, machine learning (ML), and generative artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to enhance operational efficiency and workplace safety while becoming a more data-driven organization.
Strini Mudaly, Group ICT Vice President at Gold Fields, emphasized that AWS was chosen for its proven operational experience and commitment to innovation. The collaboration is expected to drive cost efficiencies and modernize infrastructure, aligning with Gold Fields’ goal of transforming its business through cutting-edge solutions.
Deloitte played a crucial role in this transition by partnering with Gold Fields and AWS to migrate the company’s SAP estates across three continents. Aasif Karachi, Director and Africa AWS Leader at Deloitte Consulting, highlighted that the migration was executed with precision, ensuring data privacy, regulatory compliance, and a seamless transition with zero business impact.
Chris Erasmus, AWS Country General Manager, underscored the transformative impact of cloud technology on the mining sector. The migration to AWS is set to modernize Gold Fields’ platform, enabling the company to fully utilize its internal data through advanced analytics and machine learning, thereby supporting its future business strategy.
Gold Fields, which operates in Chile, South Africa, Ghana, Canada, Australia, and Peru, will benefit from AWS’s secure and scalable infrastructure. This move is expected to enhance data processing speeds and reduce operational costs while maintaining high standards of governance and risk management.
Looking ahead, Gold Fields is exploring additional AWS capabilities, such as Industrial Data Fabric and Generative AI, to further enhance data management practices and support improvements in safety and operational processes within the dynamic mining industry.
