iColo, a carrier-neutral data center infrastructure provider, has announced the addition and commissioning of over 650 kilowatts (kW) of new solar installations at its data center campuses in Nairobi and Mombasa. This significant investment in renewable energy underscores iColo’s commitment to sustainability and its support for customers’ renewable energy goals.

Over 450 kW of the new solar capacity is being deployed at iColo’s Nairobi campus, which hosts more than 60 national and global networks. This addition will facilitate further campus expansion and enhance the facility’s sustainable energy sources. The remaining nearly 200 kW will be utilized at the Miritini Mombasa campus, which is rapidly growing and now houses over 85 network providers.

Ranjith Cherickel, Founder and CEO of iColo, highlighted the company’s dedication to advancing Kenya’s renewable energy landscape. Cherickel emphasized that iColo is not only embracing renewable energy but is actively driving it forward. The company plans to continue investing in solar power to meet its future energy needs and support its expansion goals.

Kenya’s power grid is notably renewable, with 82% of its energy generation mix derived from renewable sources such as geothermal, hydro, and wind. iColo’s recent solar expansion aligns with this trend and reflects Digital Realty’s broader sustainability commitments. The company is engaging in discussions to secure additional spaces for further solar installations, including greenfields, car parks, and rooftops.

iColo aims to meet 25% of its facilities’ power needs through solar installations as part of its long-term goals. The company’s master plan includes three data centers and a captive substation, with a total power consumption expected to exceed 20 megawatts (MW) upon full capacity. The second data center in Nairobi, NBO2, is anticipated to come online in Q3 2025.

These efforts are part of Digital Realty’s global sustainability initiatives, including a pledge to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 68% and Scope 3 emissions by 24% by 2030. Digital Realty has also secured contracts for over 1.4 gigawatts of renewable power, demonstrating its commitment to clean energy. The recent solar project in Kenya is a key step in expanding the company’s renewable energy footprint across Africa.
