Ethio Telecom, in collaboration with Visa Inc., has launched Ethiopia’s first wallet-based virtual Visa Card and introduced services aimed at improving remittances via Visa Direct and the Telebirr Remit App. This partnership marks a significant step in expanding Ethiopia’s digital banking services, providing more accessible and convenient financial tools to the population.
The newly launched virtual Visa Card is accessible through Telebirr, allowing users to make online cross-border payments and engage in e-commerce, further advancing the country’s shift towards a cashless society. Visa Direct enables individuals and institutions worldwide to send funds directly to Ethiopia using the Telebirr virtual card number, simplifying the process of international remittances.
Ethio Telecom emphasized that the introduction of these services will significantly enhance Ethiopia’s digital financial ecosystem, offering more robust and secure payment solutions. The ability to receive funds from over 190 countries is expected to boost financial inclusion and empower Ethiopian citizens with more diverse economic opportunities.
To receive funds using Visa Direct, customers simply need to register for the Virtual Visa service through the Telebirr SuperApp and share their 16-digit card information with the sender. This streamlined process makes it easier for users to access international remittances, contributing to the growth of Ethiopia’s digital economy.
The collaboration between Ethio Telecom and Visa Inc. underscores the potential of digital financial services to transform economies by facilitating smoother, faster, and more secure transactions. By integrating these advanced services, Ethio Telecom is positioning itself as a key player in Ethiopia’s digital transformation journey.
This initiative is expected to drive Ethiopia closer to its goal of becoming a cashless society, while also enhancing the country’s integration into the global digital economy.
