MTN Group, Africa’s largest telecom provider, is exploring significant investments in neuroscience to enhance its talent management strategies. According to Paul Norman, MTN Group’s Chief Human Resources Officer, as organizations face continuous disruptions, evolving and adapting becomes crucial. He emphasized that deep collaboration, human cognition, and values-based practices are vital areas where neuroscience will play a transformative role.

Norman explained that neuroscience, which covers both fundamental and advanced cognitive processes, influences human interactions, emotions, decision-making, and preferences. He believes that as teams, managers, and leaders are assembled, neuroscience will become as critical as qualifications and experience, with psychometry and neuroscience emerging as essential future skills.

In a recent interview with ITWeb Africa, Norman discussed the MTN Group’s inaugural People Report, released last month. He highlighted the report’s role in showcasing the company’s ambitions, the impact of technology on human resources, and its commitment to supporting its 17,500+ employees across its markets.

Norman also detailed MTN’s efforts to create a sustainable and inclusive human capital ecosystem. The People Report reflects the company’s 30-year legacy and its focus on staying ahead of global changes, emphasizing the richness of Africa’s talent landscape.

Addressing the management of a diverse workforce spanning 18 countries and over 70 nationalities, Norman praised MTN’s natural diversity. He stressed the importance of creating an environment where every employee can thrive and be authentic, using global practices and local adaptations to tailor people strategies effectively.

Looking ahead, Norman identified key HR technology trends shaping MTN’s workplace, including the integration of core cloud solutions, automation, and AI into a unified platform. He believes that tech-led people analytics will drive decision-making, enhance digital wellbeing, and foster continuous innovation and collaboration.
