CHINT Global, a leading provider of smart energy solutions, has inaugurated a new manufacturing plant at Graylands Industrial Park in Athi River, Machakos County. This new facility marks CHINT Group’s tenth overseas unit and its second on the African continent, underscoring the company’s commitment to expanding its global footprint.
The new plant will produce a range of advanced metering solutions, including the CHD130 Single Phase DIN-Rail Meter, CHS120 Single Phase Smart Meter, and CHS320 Three Phase Smart Meter. These products will cater to both residential and commercial needs, incorporating features such as anti-tamper systems, flexible installation options, and secure communication protocols.
Lily Zhang, President of CHINT Global, highlighted the significance of the new factory, stating that it represents more than just a manufacturing site. “Our new factory in Kenya is a beacon of innovation, sustainability, and economic growth for the region,” Zhang noted. This facility aims to contribute positively to the local economy and enhance technological capabilities in the region.
The plant boasts a production capacity of up to 400,000 meters per year and will initially employ 40 individuals, with 90 percent being local staff. The facility is projected to achieve a localisation rate of 30%–40% for its products, with plans to increase this rate as operations expand, further supporting local employment and economic development.
In addition to serving the Kenyan market, the factory is positioned to export products to neighboring countries including Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Congo (DRC), and Somalia. This strategic positioning enhances CHINT Global’s ability to meet the growing demand for smart energy solutions across the region.
Joy Brenda Masinde, Chairman of KPLC, emphasized the impact of the new meters on energy distribution in Kenya. “These meters will enable us to provide accurate billing, reduce losses, and improve overall efficiency. This investment is not just in technology; it’s an investment in Kenya’s future,” Masinde stated.
