Google has announced the expansion of its Wildfire Boundary Tracker to 17 new countries, including Kenya, significantly enhancing global efforts to combat the growing threat of wildfires. This AI-powered tool is designed to provide communities with accurate and up-to-date information on wildfire boundaries directly through Google Search and Maps, offering crucial support in emergency situations.

The expansion of the Wildfire Boundary Tracker comes amid a dramatic increase in wildfires worldwide, with Europe and Africa particularly affected. Leveraging advanced AI technology, the tool analyzes satellite imagery and other data sources to deliver precise, real-time information on wildfire progression, helping communities to better prepare for and respond to these natural disasters.

Yossi Matias, Vice President & Head of Google Research, emphasizes Google’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance safety during natural disasters. He states, “By expanding our wildfire boundary tracker, we hope to empower communities with the information they need to protect themselves and their loved ones.” This tool not only provides critical safety alerts but also includes essential guidance and support in multiple languages.

A report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) highlights that wildfires are becoming increasingly frequent and intense due to rising global temperatures. Africa, which experiences 67 percent of the global wildfire toll, has seen significant impacts, including substantial tree cover loss in countries like Kenya. In 2024 alone, Kenya has reported 341 high-confidence fire alerts.

The expanded tracker is designed to complement existing emergency response efforts, offering an additional layer of protection for at-risk communities. It supports diverse populations and is equipped with safety tips and guidance tailored to affected areas, reflecting Google’s commitment to enhancing public safety through innovative technology.

The new countries included in this expansion are Andorra, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Kenya, Monaco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, Rwanda, Slovenia, Spain, and Turkey, marking a significant step in global wildfire management efforts.
