Nigeria, US Agree to Enhance AI, Data Protection

The US and Nigeria have taken a significant step towards enhancing data security and Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovation by signing a memorandum of understanding. This pivotal agreement aims to establish the US-Nigeria Commercial and Investment Partnership, fostering collaboration and growth in the digital economy.

Gina Raimondo, the US commerce secretary, and Dr. Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, Nigeria’s minister of investment, trade, and industry, signed the agreement, underscoring the shared goals of developing the digital economy, supporting innovation, and boosting digital trade and investment between the two nations.

The US secretary of commerce and Nigerian minister of communications, innovation, and digital economy, Olatunbosun Tijani, highlighted the transformative potential of the digital economy. They emphasized its capacity to drive economic growth, create jobs, and promote an inclusive, equitable, ethical, and sustainable digital future for both citizens and the global community.

Recognizing AI’s transformative power, Raimondo and Tijani discussed the significant impact AI can have across various sectors. They stressed the importance of harnessing AI for positive societal and economic change while mitigating its risks, aligning with global standards for safe and trustworthy AI systems.

Both parties committed to implementing the United Nations General Assembly resolution on “Seizing the Opportunities of Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence Systems for Sustainable Development” (A/78/L.49). They emphasized the crucial role of secure information and communications technology, data privacy, and cross-border data transfers in the development of emerging technologies like AI.

The agreement reflects a mutual commitment to creating interoperable privacy frameworks and facilitating trustworthy cross-border data flows. This collaboration aims to uphold domestic laws, privacy, and civil rights, ensuring a robust foundation for the advancement of critical technologies and the digital economy.
