Safaricom has surged ahead in the 5G race, now operating 803 5G sites across 43 counties in Kenya, as disclosed in its latest annual report. This significant milestone marks a notable shift from last year, where Safaricom trailed behind Airtel with 205 sites compared to Airtel’s 370. Now, Safaricom’s expansive network underscores its commitment to delivering super-fast internet speeds to customers nationwide.

In contrast, Airtel Kenya has activated 690 5G sites, showcasing its own aggressive rollout strategy that has expanded coverage to 39 counties, up from 16 just last year. This intensifying competition between Safaricom and Airtel highlights the growing importance of data services in Kenya’s telecommunications landscape.

Safaricom aims to further bolster its market lead by increasing its 5G sites to over 1,700 within the next year, reinforcing its commitment to providing robust connectivity solutions for both residential and business users. This expansion not only enhances internet access but also supports Kenya’s digital transformation agenda.

The introduction of 5G technology promises faster internet speeds, though adoption has been constrained by the requirement for high-end smartphones and costly data bundles. Both Safaricom and Airtel are striving to overcome these barriers, with Airtel recently launching a 5G-enabled router aimed at democratizing access to the technology.

As Kenya’s largest telecommunications provider, Safaricom continues to innovate, leveraging its extensive fibre network to empower customers with seamless connectivity at home, work, and on the move. The rapid deployment of 5G reflects Safaricom’s dedication to meeting the evolving needs of its customer base in an increasingly digital world.
