Airtel Zambia and Zambia Industrial Commercial Bank Limited (ZICB) have joined forces under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance the business landscape for Zambia’s Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). As part of this collaboration, Airtel will provide state-of-the-art 4G and 5G Internet devices to ZICB’s SME clients at no cost, contingent upon their registration for the bank’s Internet banking platform and commitment to monthly bundles.
This initiative aims to deliver reliable, high-speed Internet connectivity using Airtel’s advanced devices, crucial for empowering SMEs in Zambia. With the country’s Internet penetration projected to increase from 31.2% to 43.44% by year-end, initiatives like these are pivotal in bridging digital divides and fostering economic growth.
To bolster Internet accessibility further, Zambia plans to erect 520 communication towers nationwide by late 2025, aiming for 96% coverage of phone and Internet services. Additionally, recent government initiatives include the construction of 60 4G mobile towers and digital centers, ensuring rural areas receive enhanced Internet connectivity and free digital services.
Dr. Louis Kabula, Acting CEO of ZICB, underscored the bank’s robust digital banking infrastructure designed to optimize capital management efficiency and enhance client convenience. He highlighted ZICB’s commitment to reducing business costs, particularly for SMEs, which play a critical role in Zambia’s economy through numerous commercial transactions.
Lindiwe Banda, Airtel Business Director, emphasized that this partnership will streamline Internet banking services for ZICB’s SME clientele, enabling seamless operations from their business premises or homes. SMEs will benefit from Airtel’s devices, facilitating online invoicing and transaction record-keeping, thus enhancing operational efficiency and financial management.
Zambia remains a strategic market for Airtel Africa, particularly with its robust Airtel Money product and plans for an upcoming public listing in 2025. Leveraging first-mover advantages and strong market infrastructure, Airtel aims to further enhance connectivity solutions and empower businesses across Zambia.
