The Kenyan government is set to save a staggering Ksh 170 billion through an innovative deal between Kenya Power Company and the Ministry of ICT. By utilizing Kenya Power’s transmission lines, the government will roll out 100,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable across the country, delivering high-speed internet connectivity more efficiently and cost-effectively. Information, Communications and the Digital Economy CS Eliud Owalo highlighted that this strategic move will enable the project to be completed by 2026, a year ahead of schedule.

CS Owalo explained that the initial plan of digging trenches to lay the cable would have cost taxpayers Ksh 2.3 million per kilometre. In contrast, using Kenya Power transmission lines will only cost Ksh 600,000 per kilometre. This approach not only slashes costs but also accelerates the delivery of high-speed internet to every household and business with Kenya Power meters, ensuring a more connected Kenya.

Speaking at Nyamira Girls High School during the school’s ICT day, Owalo emphasized the government’s commitment to leveraging ICT for economic growth. The creation of 1,450 digital hubs across the country aims to curb rural-urban migration by providing local job opportunities for the youth, enabling them to work for global companies from their local areas.

Owalo noted that the public digital hubs will train the youth, empowering them to establish private digital hubs and extend opportunities to more young people, even in remote areas. This multiplier effect is expected to create a critical mass of digital hubs in villages, significantly reducing youth unemployment and promoting gainful activities.

Currently, over 2,000 registered students are undertaking higher education on the e-learning platform based at Konza. The platform, commissioned by President William Ruto, offers an affordable and inclusive way for students to access higher education without being confined to traditional classrooms, making education more accessible to all.

The ICT and Digital Economy boss underscored the Kenya Kwanza government’s dedication to creating an inclusive digital economy. By 2026, the delivery of 100,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable will revolutionize the country’s connectivity, fostering economic growth and ensuring that all Kenyans benefit from the digital age.
