Exciting news from Uber South Africa! The ride-hailing giant has introduced teenage accounts, allowing users aged 13 to 17 to request rides with parental consent. With safety as a top priority, Uber has implemented features like live trip tracking, minimum driver ratings, and spending limits to ensure peace of mind for parents, teens, and drivers alike.
Kagiso Khaole, Uber Sub-Saharan Africa’s General Manager, emphasized that the teen account was designed with transparency in mind, ensuring that there are no surprises for all parties involved. Parents or legal guardians can set up the teen account for their children, providing oversight and control over their transportation needs.
To set up a teen account, parents/guardians send an invite link to their teen, who then downloads the app and completes the safety onboarding process. A PIN verification is required before each ride, and parents receive push notifications throughout the trip, allowing them to track their teen’s journey in real-time.
Uber’s commitment to safety extends to drivers as well, with stringent screening and background checks for those participating in the teen account program. Additional safety features, such as audio recording, destination lock, and the ability to contact drivers directly, further enhance the overall safety of the service.
