Madagascar has reached a major milestone in its digital transformation journey after successfully testing Direct-to-Cell satellite connectivity technology, becoming only the third African country to conduct a live trial after Kenya and Uganda.
The demonstration was carried out by Airtel Madagascar in partnership with the Ministry of Digital Development, Posts and Telecommunications (MNDPT), with participation from the Communications Regulatory Authority (ARTEC), the National Disaster Risk Management Office (BNGRC) and other stakeholders.
Direct-to-Cell technology enables standard 4G smartphones to connect directly to satellites when outside the reach of terrestrial mobile networks. During the trial, participants completed Madagascar’s first WhatsApp video call using satellite connectivity, alongside successful voice calls, messaging and access to digital platforms including Facebook and YouTube.
The technology has the potential to significantly improve connectivity in remote and underserved communities while strengthening communication capabilities during emergencies and natural disasters that disrupt traditional mobile networks.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting innovative technologies that promote digital inclusion while ensuring compliance with national regulations, digital sovereignty and security standards.
The successful trial positions Madagascar among Africa’s early adopters of next-generation satellite communications, highlighting the country’s continued efforts to expand access to reliable digital services and accelerate nationwide digital transformation.
