Nigerian startup ZippCart is pioneering smart, offline-first self-checkout solutions designed for retail stores in emerging markets, starting with Africa. Founded in early 2025, ZippCart addresses long-standing inefficiencies in African retail, including long queues, slow manual checkouts, and outdated infrastructure. The device attaches directly to shopping carts, allowing customers to scan items as they shop, track totals in real-time, and complete checkout instantly via a cart code or QR, with offline data syncing and immediate receipt printing.

Blessed Pepple, ZippCart’s founder, explains that the solution is fully offline, affordable, and plug-and-play, requiring no internet, cloud services, or complex integrations. Unlike global solutions like Amazon Dash Cart or Caper AI, ZippCart is purpose-built for emerging markets, delivering self-checkout efficiency without the prohibitive costs or technical demands of high-end systems. The device integrates seamlessly with existing retail workflows, making it accessible and scalable for local supermarkets, grocery stores, and mall-based retailers.

Since its inception, ZippCart has made significant progress through bootstrapped funding, hackathon winnings, and technical partnerships. The startup has built a working prototype, developed a full offline workflow, and created a cashier-side PC application to manage cart data and receipts in real-time. Milestones include winning the 2025 National Geographic Wild Slingshot Challenge and multiple national hackathons, validating the product’s potential and real-world applicability. Early engagement from retail chains and supermarkets has been promising, with several stores expressing interest in paid pilot programs once production begins.

ZippCart is initially focusing on Nigeria due to its large retail sector, tech-savvy consumers, and pressing need for affordable automation. The company plans to expand across West Africa, targeting markets such as Ghana, Kenya, and Ivory Coast, with long-term aspirations for other emerging markets in Africa and Southeast Asia. Operating on a hybrid revenue model, ZippCart generates income from device sales and optional software subscriptions, providing retailers with updates, analytics, and support, while creating predictable, sustainable revenue for the startup.
